The Alain Suisse winery, in Cumières in Champagne, has been family-run since the 1960s. Known for high-quality champagnes such as Brut Nature and Brut Réserve, it combines tradition and modern techniques.
Alain and Janick Suisse are the descendants of a heritage spanning four generations. Since 1870, 3 hectares of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, the typical Champagne grape varieties, have been vinified on the slopes of Cumières (a village in the Marne Valley that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site).
The soil in this area consists of a mixture of humus and clay on the surface and limestone in the subsoil. The porosity of the limestone transforms the subsoil into a large water reservoir, which provides the vines with a water reserve even in the driest summers. At the same time, the limestone stores the heat from the sun and slowly releases it to the vines at night, which allows the grapes to ripen perfectly.
No pesticides are used in the vineyard and there are no temperature controls or filtrations in the wine cellar. This philosophy has enabled Suisse to obtain not only organic certification, but also certification for high environmental value (HVE).
