Bolzano Wines & Wineries

In the heart of South Tyrol's wine-growing region around Bolzano, Lagrein and Vernatsch thrive on sun-drenched slopes — delights with an alpine character.

Bolzano is one of South Tyrol’s historic wine-growing centres, with vineyards extending from the warm valley floor to the sunny slopes surrounding the city. The best-known wine areas include Gries, traditionally associated with Lagrein, and St. Magdalena above Bolzano, the historic home of Schiava (Vernatsch) and St. Magdalener. Lagrein particularly benefits from the warm, gravelly soils around Bolzano and typically produces deeply coloured, structured red wines, while Schiava shows a lighter, fruit-driven and elegant side of the region.

The wines of Bolzano combine Alpine freshness with the warmth of one of South Tyrol’s lowest and sunniest growing areas. Lagrein is known for dark fruit, spice and firm but polished tannins, while St. Magdalener is traditionally based on Schiava, often complemented by a small proportion of Lagrein, resulting in fragrant, fresh and highly drinkable red wines. White varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon and Gewürztraminer also play an important role in the cooler vineyards around the Bolzano basin and its surrounding hills.

Wineries from Bolzano

Among the characteristic producers of the area is Ansitz Waldgries, a historic estate in St. Magdalena with a strong focus on local varieties such as Schiava and Lagrein. Its wines combine the traditional identity of Bolzano with a precise, contemporary style.

Erbhof Unterganzner is a long-established family estate on the eastern side of the Bolzano basin. Lagrein and Schiava are central to the winery, with powerful Lagrein wines and classic St. Magdalener reflecting the warm conditions and distinctive soils around Bolzano.

For a more individual interpretation of the region, Weingut Pranzegg works biodynamically in steep vineyards around the Bolzano basin. Schiava, Lagrein and Gewürztraminer are vinified with spontaneous fermentation, long lees contact and minimal intervention, producing distinctive wines with a strong sense of origin.

In the hills above Bolzano, Ansitz Dolomytos Sacker cultivates steep, south-facing vineyards on weathered porphyry soils near Renon. The organically certified estate works with spontaneous fermentation and produces an individual range of red, white, amphora and pét-nat wines.

Egger Ramer is particularly closely associated with Lagrein from Gries. Its Lagrein shows the dark fruit, depth and structured character for which this historic part of Bolzano is known, while the estate also produces Schiava and selected white varieties.
