Cantina Frentana
Founded in 1958 in the heart of Abruzzo, Cantina Frentana has grown into one of the region’s most established wine cooperatives, deeply rooted in local viticultural tradition. Based in Rocca San Giovanni, near the Adriatic coast in the province of Chieti, the cooperative was created with the goal of preserving the region’s winemaking heritage while supporting local grape growers. Over the decades, Cantina Frentana has combined experience, regional identity, and modern cellar techniques to produce wines that reflect the authentic character of Abruzzo.
Today, the cooperative brings together around 500 winegrowers who cultivate approximately 1,000 hectares of vineyards across the rolling hills of the Frentano area. This close collaboration between many small growers allows Cantina Frentana to preserve local traditions while maintaining consistent quality standards. The vineyards extend from coastal areas toward higher inland elevations, creating a broad diversity of microclimates and expressions within the wines.
Cantina Frentana is especially known for working with native and historically important grape varieties of Abruzzo. Among the most prominent is Montepulciano, the region’s flagship red grape, valued for its depth, dark fruit character, and structure. The cooperative also produces elegant Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, a traditional rosé style known for freshness and vibrant fruit. On the white wine side, Trebbiano remains an important classic, appreciated for its freshness and versatility, while Cococciola, an indigenous variety of Abruzzo, offers lively acidity and distinctive character. Passerina further enriches the portfolio with aromatic freshness and Mediterranean vibrancy, highlighting the diversity of the region’s white wines.
The terroir of Abruzzo plays a defining role in shaping the wines. Vineyards benefit from a unique combination of calcareous and clay-rich soils, cooling influences from the nearby Adriatic Sea, and temperature variations created by the proximity of the Apennine Mountains. Warm sunny days encourage full ripeness, while cooler nights help preserve freshness and aromatic precision. This balance gives Cantina Frentana’s wines both structure and elegance, while remaining unmistakably linked to their regional origins.
