The Überetsch (Oltradige) region is one of South Tyrol’s most important wine-growing areas and has played a defining role in shaping the reputation of Alto Adige wines. Located southwest of Bolzano and stretching across villages such as Appiano (Eppan), Caldaro (Kaltern), Cornaiano (Girlan), and Termeno (Tramin), Überetsch combines centuries of viticultural tradition with remarkable geographic diversity. Surrounded by vineyards, forests, and the nearby Lake Caldaro, the region is especially known for elegant white wines, refined reds, and a strong connection between landscape and wine culture.
The climate in Überetsch is often described as Alpine-Mediterranean, a combination that creates ideal conditions for viticulture. Warm air currents from the south bring sunshine and ripening power, while cool Alpine winds descending from the Dolomites preserve freshness and aromatic precision. These marked temperature differences between day and night are particularly valuable for maintaining acidity and balance in the grapes. Lake Caldaro also contributes to a more stable climate by moderating temperatures, while vineyard elevations ranging from valley floors to steep hillside slopes create a broad range of growing conditions. The soils vary from limestone and clay to gravelly moraines and volcanic porphyry, giving wines structure, finesse, and mineral character.
Überetsch is home to a wide variety of grape types, making it one of South Tyrol’s most versatile wine regions. Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Gewürztraminer thrive in cooler and elevated vineyard sites, producing wines with freshness, aromatic clarity, and ageing potential. Red varieties also play an important role, especially Lagrein, one of South Tyrol’s signature grapes, alongside Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The region is home to several producers that each contribute to the identity of Überetsch in different ways.
Eppan Winery, one of South Tyrol’s leading cooperatives, has helped shape the international reputation of South Tyrolean white wines through iconic labels such as Sanct Valentin and Appius. Similarly,
Girlan Winery, based in the village of Cornaiano, is highly regarded for wines that reflect historic vineyard sites and precise cellar craftsmanship, especially Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
Sustainable and terroir-driven viticulture has become increasingly important in Überetsch.
Manincor, located near Lake Caldaro, stands among the region’s best-known biodynamic estates, producing elegant wines such as Tannenberg, Cassiano, and Sophie. A different but equally distinctive path is followed by
Thomas Niedermayr, who has become one of South Tyrol’s pioneers of PIWI wines, working with fungus-resistant grape varieties and environmentally conscious farming methods.
Smaller family-run estates also contribute significantly to the diversity of the region.
Peter Sölva, one of South Tyrol’s oldest wine estates, is known for labels such as Amistar and DeSilva, combining tradition with modern precision. Meanwhile,
Abraham Winery represents a highly artisanal approach to winemaking, focusing on expressive wines with strong vineyard character and authenticity.
