Köfererhof

Köfererhof is one of the oldest and most renowned wineries in the Valle Isarco (Eisacktal) and is located in Novacella near Varna, just a few kilometres north of Bressanone in South Tyrol. Nestled within the alpine landscape of Italy’s northernmost wine-growing region, the estate benefits from unique climatic conditions. Steep vineyard slopes, cool nights, pronounced temperature differences between day and night, and mineral-rich soils all shape viticulture in this area. These factors create fresh, elegant, and highly mineral white wines, which are characteristic of the Valle Isarco.

The history of Köfererhof dates back many centuries. Historical records first mention the estate in 976, making it one of the oldest agricultural properties in South Tyrol. For generations, the farm focused on traditional agriculture before the Kerschbaumer family increasingly specialised in high-quality viticulture. Since the mid-1990s, the estate has vinified its own wines, whereas previously the grapes had been supplied to other wineries. Today, Günther and Gaby Kerschbaumer manage Köfererhof with passion, dedication, and a strong commitment to quality.

The Valle Isarco is especially known for its distinctive white wines. Due to the cool alpine climate, grape varieties thrive here that express freshness, precision, and pronounced minerality. Typical varieties of the region include Sylvaner, Kerner, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Grüner Veltliner, and Gewürztraminer. These grape varieties also play a central role at Köfererhof. Kerner and Sylvaner, in particular, are considered flagship wines of the estate and perfectly reflect the alpine terroir of the Valle Isarco.

The vineyards of Köfererhof are situated at an altitude of around 650 to 700 metres above sea level and are cultivated with great care. The combination of high elevation, long ripening periods, and meticulous manual work results in elegant white wines with refined structure and precise aromatics. Thanks to these characteristics, Köfererhof has earned an outstanding reputation far beyond the borders of South Tyrol.
