The Barolo Riserva "Monfortino" is considered an icon of Italian winemaking
Giacomo Conterno is one of the most historic and influential wineries in Piedmont. Its origins date back to 1908, when Giovanni Conterno began producing wine. The estate gained international recognition with the legendary Barolo Monfortino, still regarded today as one of Italy’s most iconic and long-lived wines.
The winery is based in Monforte d’Alba, in the heart of the Langhe, and is now led by Roberto Conterno. Under his leadership, the stylistic direction has been further refined while remaining deeply rooted in tradition. A key milestone was the acquisition of the renowned Vigna Francia in Serralunga d’Alba, which today forms the backbone of the estate’s production and is known for producing wines of great structure and longevity.
The philosophy is centered on uncompromising quality, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Yields are kept low to ensure concentration and precision. In the cellar, long fermentations and aging in large oak casks are preferred, allowing the wines to develop depth, balance, and exceptional aging potential.
Alongside Barolo, the estate also produces outstanding Barbera d’Alba, particularly from Vigna Francia, where the grape achieves a rare combination of power, freshness, and mineral tension. Overall, the wines of Giacomo Conterno stand for precision, a strong sense of place, and remarkable capacity to evolve over time.
