UNTERORTL WINERY AT CASTEL JUVAL
The Castel Juval Unterortl winery in the Vinschgau, South Tyrol, was founded in 1992 by Reinhold Messner. The vineyards lie on the steep slopes around Castel Juval above Naturns and range from approximately 620 to 850 metres above sea level. Around 4.3 hectares of organically farmed vineyards produce distinctive wines shaped by the high-altitude sites and the dry climate of the Vinschgau.
Today, the winery is run by Raphael and Christine Burki. Their international experience in viticulture contributes to the work at Juval. Different vineyard exposures, considerable variations in altitude and the interplay of warm and cool air currents create highly individual conditions in each parcel. Much of the work in the steep vineyards is carried out carefully by hand.
The focus is primarily on Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Noir, complemented by further wines and cuvées. The range includes Pinot Blanc Castel Juval, Pinot Blanc Himmelsleiter, Riesling Gletscherschliff, Müller-Thurgau Schlossleiten, Pinot Noir Rosé and Pinot Noir Riserva. The different elevations make it possible to match each grape variety with the most suitable site and to bring out its individual character with precision.
Castel Juval is closely connected to the identity of the winery and also features in the names of many of its wines. The steep slopes of the Juval hill, the dry Vinschgau climate and the marked temperature differences between day and night give the wines a distinctive style defined by freshness, precision and a clear sense of origin.
