Muri Gries Abbey Winery
Muri-Gries Abbey Winery
is one of the most historic wine estates in South Tyrol and is closely connected to the winemaking tradition of Bolzano. The winery is located within the former Augustinian monastery of Gries, whose origins date back to the 12th century. Since the 19th century, the Benedictine monks of Muri-Gries have shaped the estate, combining monastic heritage with modern quality-focused viticulture. The historic cellar vaults and the unique location in the heart of the Bolzano basin give the winery its distinctive identity.
Lagrein is the central focus of the estate and one of South Tyrol’s most important native grape varieties. Around Bolzano, the grape benefits from ideal conditions including warm temperatures, gravel-rich soils, and strong day-to-night temperature variation, resulting in wines with intense fruit, refined spice, and structured character. Muri-Gries is internationally regarded as one of the leading producers of Lagrein and has played a major role in elevating the reputation of the variety. In addition to Lagrein, the winery also produces Pinot Noir, Schiava, Chardonnay, and Gewürztraminer.
The renowned “Abtei” line highlights traditional South Tyrolean grape varieties and selected terroir-driven wines. These wines combine elegance, regional identity, and a clear sense of origin. The flagship wine of the estate is the Lagrein Riserva “Klosteranger”, sourced from historic vineyards surrounding the monastery and considered one of South Tyrol’s most prestigious Lagrein wines. Extended ageing and meticulous cellar work create powerful, profound wines with excellent ageing potential.
