The Grauburgunder “Oberbergener Bassgeige Kähner” VDP.Grosses Gewächs 2022 from Franz Keller impresses with a brilliant copper-gold hue and refined clarity. On the nose, it reveals an intricate bouquet of white currant, cherry blossom, honeysuckle, acacia, and orange blossom. The palate is dry and silky, with a smooth texture and a medium-length finish, where floral notes, gooseberry, and the minerality of loess and volcanic soils come together harmoniously. Made from Pinot Gris, this wine offers the varietal's typical fullness, nutty undertones, and ripe yellow fruit aromas, all balanced by a moderate acidity. Maturation in small oak barrels adds further depth and structure. The designation “Grosses Gewächs” stands for the highest category of dry wines from Germany’s top vineyard sites, as defined by the VDP. It signifies strict quality standards and a strong sense of origin, making this wine a benchmark for terroir-driven excellence.
