Gunderloch

The Gunderloch estate cultivates 24 hectares of vineyards, including the renowned sites Rothenberg, Pettenthal, and Hipping.

Back in 1890, banker Carl Gunderloch made a bold move by acquiring the now-legendary Nackenheimer Rothenberg vineyard in Rheinhessen. This visionary step laid the foundation for what is today Weingut Gunderloch – a family-run estate now in its sixth generation, led by the Hasselbach family.

The estate cultivates 24 hectares of vines, including top sites such as Rothenberg, Pettenthal, and Hipping. The Rothenberg, known for its distinctive red slate soils ("Rotliegendes"), gives the Rieslings a unique mineral structure and depth. These steep slopes require meticulous manual labor and reward it with grapes of exceptional quality.

Gunderloch’s winemaking philosophy is rooted in sustainable vineyard practices and minimal intervention in the cellar. The focus is on giving each wine time and space to express its origin. Long skin contact, slow spontaneous fermentation, and extended aging are essential elements that shape these authentic, terroir-driven wines.

Under the leadership of Johannes Hasselbach, who took over the estate in 2016, Weingut Gunderloch continues to set benchmarks for high-quality German Riesling. His dedication to both tradition and innovation has earned the estate national and international acclaim. Whether from the Rothenberg’s mineral-rich slopes or the elegant Pettenthal and Hipping vineyards, Gunderloch Rieslings embody precision, complexity, and a true sense of place – making them a standout in the world of fine German white wine.
