Turbiana is the white grape variety behind the renowned Lugana wines produced around Lake Garda, particularly on the southern shores between Lombardy and Veneto. The grape is known for producing elegant white wines with vibrant freshness, delicate citrus aromas, floral nuances and a characteristic mineral profile shaped by the region’s calcareous clay soils.
For many years, Turbiana was often associated with Trebbiano due to similarities in appearance and historical naming conventions. Modern genetic research, however, has shown that Turbiana differs significantly from common Trebbiano varieties and is much more closely related to Verdicchio. Compared to Trebbiano Toscano, Turbiana generally delivers more structure, higher ageing potential and a more pronounced mineral character.
The mild climate around Lake Garda plays a central role in the style of Turbiana wines. Cooling lake breezes help preserve acidity and freshness even during warm summers, allowing the grape to maintain balance and aromatic precision. Young Lugana wines made from Turbiana are often crisp and expressive, showing notes of lemon, white peach, almond and subtle herbs. With bottle ageing, the wines can develop greater complexity, texture and refined savoury nuances.
Pasini San Giovanni is one of the producers highlighting the elegant and sustainable side of Turbiana. Located near Lake Garda, the winery focuses on organic viticulture and produces Lugana wines that emphasise freshness, purity and mineral expression typical of the terroir.
Cantina Zeni has a long history connected to the wine culture of Lake Garda and Veneto. Their Lugana wines showcase the approachable and vibrant character of Turbiana, combining delicate fruit with balanced acidity and regional authenticity.
Colli Vaibo represents a more boutique interpretation of Lugana and Turbiana. The winery focuses on expressive wines with precise fruit, elegant structure and a clear connection to the calcareous soils surrounding the southern shores of Lake Garda.
