Contratto

In the early 20th century, Contratto gained international recognition and supplied its wines to the Vatican, the House of Savoy, and the Belgian Royal Family, among others.

The Cantina Contratto is one of the oldest and most prestigious wineries in Italy, with a history dating back to 1867. Founded by Giuseppe Contratto in Canelli, Piedmont, the company began producing Moscato and was among the first Italian producers of Metodo Classico sparkling wines, made according to the traditional bottle fermentation method.
In the early 20th century, Contratto gained international recognition and supplied its wines to the Vatican, the House of Savoy, and the Belgian Royal Family, among others. In 1919, Contratto launched the first Italian vintage sparkling wine, an innovation that highlighted the quality and uniqueness of each harvest.
In addition to sparkling wines, Contratto began producing vermouths and liqueurs in the 1920s, largely preserving traditional recipes and production techniques to this day.
In 1993, the Bocchino family, owners of a distillery of the same name, took over the management of Contratto and began restoring the historic underground cellars, often referred to as “wine cathedrals.” These tuff-carved cellars provide ideal conditions for bottle fermentation and aging of sparkling wines.
In 2011, the Rivetti family, known for their winery La Spinetta, acquired Cantina Contratto. Under the leadership of Giorgio Rivetti, the company was further modernized and expanded. A significant step was the acquisition of vineyards in the Alta Langa region, where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are grown to expand the production of DOCG-certified sparkling wines.
Today, Cantina Contratto stands for quality and innovation in Italian wine production. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques, the company produces a wide range of sparkling wines, vermouths, and liqueurs that are highly regarded both nationally and internationally.
