FRANCE

France is considered the birthplace of winemaking and fine wines.
It is no coincidence that the headquarters of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) are located in Paris. Even though Spain has a larger area of vineyards and Italy produces more hectoliters of wine, France is regarded by many wine lovers as the undisputed number one in terms of quality. Regions such as Burgundy, Bordeaux and Champagne are probably known even to those who are not wine connoisseurs. Despite its worldwide fame, however, it would be a mistake to limit the “Grande Nation du Vin” to the prestigious appellations of origin only. There is much more to discover in the approximately 400 protected areas of origin.

History

The tradition of French viticulture dates back to 600 BC. At this time, Greek immigrants created present-day Marseille and cultivated some vines for their own use. In the Middle Ages, it was finally the monks who received a good education in the monasteries and experimented with grape varieties, vineyards and cellar techniques. Their success was not long in coming! Towards the end of the Middle Ages, people all over the world spoke of the fine French wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne. French grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec or Pinot Noir traveled all over the world and made an international career. France's wines were the biggest exporters: regions such as the Loire and Bordeaux in particular benefited from the good reputation of French wines in the early 18th century. They are located right on the coast and transportation by water was very convenient and fast back then. At the end of the 19th century, oenologists from all over the world flocked to France to learn how to grow wine. The legal quality control AOC (the legendary Châteauneuf-du-Pape was appointed as the first AOC in 1935) was and still is a role model for many countries. Today, there is probably no other wine country where we can see such great contrasts between tradition and modernity. It was the French wine producers who once filled the famous cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, optimized the use of barriques and assembled what is still the finest sparkling wine in the world. At the same time, they are pioneers of many innovations and trends and thus set an example for other wine-growing nations

.

Vines & Wine Styles

Over 65% of the 46 million hectoliters produced annually go to the powerful, structured red grape varieties in France. Merlot, Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are the most commonly grown here. Fresh, racy white wines are often made from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, but Viognier has also long since become a global star.
From dry to sweet white wine styles from the Loire, the long-established rosé wines from Provence, a variety of cuvées from Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the world-famous Burgundians; France is and remains one of the top nations among wine lovers.

Climate & terroir

The almost 800,000 hectares of vineyards are spread over almost all of the 96 departments in France. The mix of long coastlines on the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean climate in southern France and continental climate in the east produces numerous grape varieties and wine styles. Due to this diversity of climate and the high proportion of limestone in the soils, the country produces more outstanding wines than any other nation in the world. However, France not only has good locations, but also defines and classifies them more strictly than any other wine-growing nation.
