Château Montrose

Today, Montrose’s terroir covers approximately 95 hectares of vineyards in a single, contiguous estate, featuring a complex mix of gravel, sand and clay subsoils—ideal conditions for producing structured, long-lived wines.

Château Montrose is a historic wine estate in the Médoc, more precisely in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, and is ranked as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the renowned 1855 Classification, one of the highest distinctions in the Bordeaux wine system.
The history of the estate begins in the early 19th century. Originally, the land was covered with heath and belonged to the Ségur family. It was not until 1815 that Étienne Théodore Dumoulin began to reclaim the heathland, plant vineyards and produce the first wines. His efforts were quickly rewarded: by the time of the 1855 Classification, Montrose was already among the youngest estates to be included in this prestigious ranking.
Following Dumoulin’s death, the estate was taken over by Mathieu Dollfus, who invested heavily in modern infrastructure, buildings and technical improvements. Towards the end of the 19th century, Montrose came into the ownership of the Charmolüe family, who managed it for three generations until 2006 and played a key role in building its reputation.
In 2006, Château Montrose was acquired by Martin and Olivier Bouygues, members of the well-known French Bouygues business group. Since then, significant investments have been made in the estate, including a strong focus on environmental initiatives such as rainwater collection and wastewater recycling.
Today, Montrose’s terroir covers approximately 95 hectares of vineyards in a single, contiguous estate, featuring a complex mix of gravel, sand and clay subsoils—ideal conditions for producing structured, long-lived wines.
The vineyard is planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, with Cabernet Sauvignon historically playing a dominant role.
Montrose now produces several wines: the flagship Grand Vin Château Montrose, the second wine La Dame de Montrose, and additional cuvées from younger vines. The wines are renowned for their depth, structure and remarkable ageing potential, often requiring decades to reach full maturity. Outstanding vintages such as 1990, 2009 and 2010 have received top ratings, confirming the estate’s exceptional quality.
Château Montrose epitomizes the classic, powerful style of Saint-Estèphe wines: deep, tannic and complex, with great concentration and impressive longevity. This style has earned it a reputation among connoisseurs as one of the most durable and reliable wines of Bordeaux.
Today, Montrose is regarded not only as a historic treasure of the Médoc, but also as a vibrant and forward-looking estate that successfully combines tradition with modern viticultural strategies—an emblem of the ongoing evolution of great Bordeaux wines.
