Château Guiraud

The grape variety composition, with about 65% Sémillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc, is classic for Sauternes, although Château Guiraud stands out for its particularly high proportion of Sauvignon compared to many neighboring estates.

Château Guiraud is regarded as one of the oldest and most prestigious producers of sweet white wines in the Bordeaux region and is located in the Sauternes appellation. It was already classified as a Premier Cru Classé in the famous 1855 Bordeaux Wine Classification, one of the highest distinctions for wines of this area.
Originally known as Maison Noble du Bayle, the estate belonged to the de Mons de Saint Poly family until it was acquired in 1766 by the Protestant Bordeaux wine merchant Pierre Guiraud. Under his leadership and that of his descendants, the property developed over roughly three generations into a highly respected estate with a growing reputation.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the château changed hands several times. After experiencing difficult periods common to many Bordeaux estates, it was taken over in 1981 by the Narby family, who initiated major modernization efforts and appointed Xavier Planty as estate director.
A decisive turning point came in 2006, when Château Guiraud was acquired by a partnership formed by entrepreneur Robert Peugeot and three renowned Bordeaux winemakers – including Olivier Bernard, Stephan von Neipperg and Xavier Planty himself. This team invested heavily in infrastructure, modernized the cellars and winemaking processes, and set new quality benchmarks.
Today, the estate covers approximately 128 hectares in total, with around 100 hectares dedicated to vineyards. The grape variety composition, with about 65% Sémillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc, is classic for Sauternes, although Château Guiraud stands out for its particularly high proportion of Sauvignon compared to many neighboring estates.
One of the most distinctive developments of recent decades has been the strong focus on organic and sustainable farming. Ecological practices have been in place since the 1990s, and in 2011 Château Guiraud became the first Premier Grand Cru Classé estate to receive official Agriculture Biologique certification.
Under its current leadership, which since 2021 includes entrepreneur Matthieu Gufflet as majority shareholder, the estate continues to combine ecological principles with the expansion of visitor and experiential offerings. Wine production, viticulture and biodiversity are closely linked through a strong commitment to sustainability, while visitors can enjoy tastings, gastronomy and immersive wine experiences on the estate.
Château Guiraud primarily produces its classic sweet Sauternes Grand Vin, renowned for its elegance, complexity and balanced sweetness, alongside a second wine (Petit Guiraud) and other white wines, including dry cuvées.
