Since 2018, Cantine Nervi has been owned by Roberto Conterno, the renowned winemaker of the prestigious Maison Giacomo Conterno in the Langhe.
Cantine Nervi was founded in 1906 by Luigi Nervi and is regarded as the oldest winery in the Gattinara DOCG area of Piedmont. The Nervi family’s vineyards trace their roots back to the 17th century, with historical references to the crus “Molsino” and “Valferana.” Over the following decades, Nervi built its reputation through vineyards planted on volcanic porphyry and clay-rich soils at the foot of Monte Rosa. In the 2010s, ownership changed: in 2011, a group of Norwegian investors led by Erling Astrup took over the estate.
Since 2018, Cantine Nervi has been owned by Roberto Conterno, the renowned winemaker of the prestigious Maison Giacomo Conterno in the Langhe. Under his direction, the winery facilities have been modernized, merging architecture and technology with a deep respect for tradition. The new winery building, designed by Studio Primatesta, combines exposed concrete, wood, and large glass surfaces in homage to the engineering style of Pier Luigi Nervi. The vineyards cover about 27–30 hectares, facing south, on porphyry- and clay-based soils – ideal for the Nebbiolo grape (locally known as “Spanna”). The winemaking philosophy focuses on traditional ageing in large oak casks and extended maturation, paired with modern cellar techniques, to fully express the unique terroir of Gattinara.
