Trentino, located just south of South Tyrol, is an independent wine region that stretches between the Alps and the Dolomites. It is internationally recognized for its high-quality sparkling wines, especially Trentodoc, made using the traditional method. The iconic producer Ferrari is a benchmark for Trentodoc, known for its elegant and complex bubbles. Abate Nero, a smaller but acclaimed winery, also crafts refined sparkling wines with great character.
But Trentino is much more than just bubbles. The region offers ideal conditions for a wide range of grape varieties, from crisp Pinot Grigio to the structured Teroldego, the area’s signature red variety. In the renowned Piana Rotaliana, Cantina Rotaliana produces expressive, terroir-driven Teroldego wines with great personality. Key white grapes include Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon Blanc, Friulano, and the rare Nosiola, particularly in the Valle dei Laghi. Among the reds, Marzemino, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir all play an important role.
One of Trentino’s most influential producers is Foradori, a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture. Elisabetta Foradori has redefined Teroldego through natural farming and precise winemaking, creating internationally acclaimed wines of depth and purity. Most Trentino wines are varietal, but blends (cuvées) are becoming more popular, especially in the white and sparkling wine segments. Thanks to its unique blend of alpine and Mediterranean climates, sustainable vineyard practices and technical expertise, Trentino is a rising star among Italy’s most dynamic and high-quality wine regions.
