The Ampeleia winery is a small paradise in Alta Maremma in Tuscany.
The Bordeaux and Tuscan grape varieties produce complex cuvées that reflect the terroir.
Ampeleia is born from the dream of three friends: Elisabetta Foradori, Giovanni Podini and Thomas Widmann, who are looking for a special place where it is possible to produce unique wines and to farm away from traditional concepts.
In 2002, they found the perfect location: Roccatederighi, in Upper Maremma, a region that stretches from the sea to the mountains, from forests to vineyards. Winemaker Marco Tait from Trentino starts this adventure, which gradually grows and is becoming more and more diverse.
In addition to the 35 hectares of vineyards whose centrepiece is Cabernet Franc, supplemented by Alicante Nero, Carignano, Mourvèdre, Sangiovese, Merlot and Grenache for the red wines and Ansonica, Malvasia and Trebbiano for the white wines, there are 54 hectares of forest, more than 30 hectares of farmland and pastures and almost 2 hectares of olive groves.
Demeter certification has been used since 2009, which means that there is no need for pesticides in the vineyards and no temperature control or filtration is used in the cellar. A special feature of cellar work is the complete absence of wood. The grapes are macerated in cement tanks, where the wine also matures. This is how “ready-to-drink” wines should be created.
The focus is on processing grapes, which are not completely autochthonous, but grow best in this diverse ecosystem. The vineyards grow on different soils, altitudes and in different microclimates, which enable the grapes to develop their full potential.
