The World of Armagnac
Produced in Gascony since the Middle Ages, Armagnac combines artisanal tradition with an intense yet velvety flavor profile.
Armagnac is made from low-alcohol white wines obtained from typical grape varieties such as Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, Colombard, and Baco. Distillation traditionally takes place in continuous copper stills, creating a spirit rich in aromas and with a more pronounced structure than other brandies. Aging in oak casks from Monlezun or Limousin imparts complexity and depth, developing notes of dried plum, candied fruit, vanilla, spices, and subtle toasted nuances. Each Armagnac reflects the terroir and savoir-faire of its maison, offering a unique sensory experience appreciated by both collectors and lovers of authentic spirits.
Among the most prestigious producers is L’Encantada, renowned for selecting and bottling rare Armagnacs from small domaines – pure expressions of the terroir. Castarède, founded in 1832, is the oldest Armagnac house still in operation and a benchmark for elegance, history, and exceptional reserves. Baron Gaston Legrand embodies the most traditional side of Gascony, with intense, complex, and long-lived Armagnacs that combine authenticity and refinement. These producers testify to the vitality and greatness of Armagnac – a spirit that unites centuries-old tradition with the ability to renew itself over time.
