Mast-Jägermeister

Despite international expansion, Mast-Jägermeister SE remains a family-run company headquartered in Wolfenbüttel.

Mast-Jägermeister SE has its roots in Wolfenbüttel, Germany, and has a long-standing tradition in the production of herbal liqueurs. The company was founded in 1878 by Wilhelm Mast, who initially worked as a wine merchant. The real breakthrough, however, came with his son Curt Mast, who developed the modern Jägermeister recipe in 1934. Inspired by German herbal medicine, Curt Mast combined 56 different herbs, roots, fruits, and spices to create a unique liqueur. The name – “Jägermeister” – refers to the traditional German term for a gamekeeper, symbolizing a connection to nature.
In the first decades, Jägermeister was mainly known regionally, especially in northern Germany, where it was served as a digestif after meals or on special occasions. From the very beginning, the company relied on secret recipes, careful quality control, and traditional production methods, including a minimum of one year of aging in oak barrels, giving the herbal liqueur its characteristic smoothness and complexity.
From the 1970s onwards, Mast-Jägermeister began marketing the herbal liqueur internationally. It gained particular popularity in the United States and other export markets – initially in bars and later as part of modern cocktail culture. Today, Jägermeister is one of the most well-known German spirits brands worldwide and stands for tradition, quality, and innovation. In addition to the classic Jägermeister, the company produces special editions, limited releases, and new variants, such as Jägermeister Spice or Jägermeister Manifest, each based on distinct flavor profiles and premium recipes.
Despite international expansion, Mast-Jägermeister SE remains a family-run company headquartered in Wolfenbüttel. The combination of historical expertise, secret herbal blends, and modern marketing has made Jägermeister a global symbol of German liqueur craftsmanship, appreciated in bars, restaurants, and private collections around the world.
