The Bitter Truth Distillery was founded in 2006 by Munich bartenders Stephan Berg and Alexander Hauck. Their vision was to revive the art of cocktail bitters and make high-quality bitters available in Germany and beyond. Faced with the limited availability of cocktail bitters in Germany, they developed the idea to produce and distribute their own bitters.
The first products from The Bitter Truth, including Orange Bitters and Old Time Aromatic Bitters, were launched in August 2006. Since then, the company has continuously expanded its range and now offers a variety of bitters such as Creole, Celery, Peach, Cucumber, Chocolate, and Grapefruit. In addition, The Bitter Truth also produces liqueurs and flavored spirits like Apricot Liqueur, Elderflower Liqueur, Golden Falernum, Pimento Dram, and Pink Gin.
A major achievement was the revival of the historic Boker's Bitters, first used in the 19th century by Jerry Thomas, one of the most famous bartenders of his time. The Bitter Truth reconstructed this bitters after more than 100 years and presented it to the professional community in 2018.
Today, The Bitter Truth is internationally recognized and regarded as one of the leading producers of cocktail bitters and flavored spirits. The company’s products are valued worldwide in bars, restaurants, and by mixologists, contributing to the revival of classic cocktail recipes.
