Aleatico is an ancient, native red grape variety primarily grown in central Italy, especially in Tuscany and the Lazio region. Genetically related to Muscat, Aleatico is known for its intensely aromatic profile, with characteristic notes of rose, violet and sweet spices. Traditionally used for producing dessert wines, the grape is now also gaining recognition for its dry, elegant expressions.
A remarkable example of modern Aleatico comes from the biodynamic winery Agricola Calafata, located in Lucca. Their wine "Majulina", a blend of Aleatico and Sangiovese, is lively and fruit-forward, with floral nuances and balanced acidity. Even more focused is "Scapigliato", a pure Aleatico that highlights the grape’s refined aromatics and silky tannins.
Today, Aleatico is considered a rare specialty, increasingly sought after by true wine enthusiasts. With its unique personality and aromatic depth, it is a grape variety that reflects both tradition and innovation in Italian winemaking.
