Cannonau is widely regarded as the most important native red grape of Sardinia, and a Mediterranean expression of Grenache with a strong local identity. While its historical origins may trace back to Spain or France, it is in Sardinia – particularly in the Ogliastra region – where Cannonau finds its most distinctive voice. Grown on sun-exposed, mineral-rich soils shaped by sea breezes, it yields bold, characterful wines with real depth.
Typical flavor profiles include ripe red berries, spices, herbal notes, and occasionally a hint of balsamic or earthy undertones. The palate is full-bodied and round, with soft tannins, good structure and balanced persistence. Cannonau wines can be enjoyed young or aged in oak for added complexity.
A classic example is the Cannonau di Sardegna DOC “Bantu” from Cantina di Jerzu, a smooth, fruit-forward wine with immediate appeal. More structured and layered is the “Marghia”, also by Jerzu, offering notes of dark fruit, Mediterranean herbs and a savory touch.
For a more evolved and age-worthy expression, the Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva DOC “Dimonios” by Sella & Mosca delivers elegance, intensity and refined spiciness.
Cannonau remains a proud symbol of Sardinian red winemaking – powerful, authentic, and deeply rooted in centuries of tradition.
