The Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOC Vignaferrovia 2019 from Tenuta Pian delle Vigne is an outstanding, traditionally crafted red wine from the heart of the renowned Montalcino region in Tuscany. It belongs to the exclusive Riserva category of Brunello, indicating that it undergoes longer and more meticulous aging than the classic Brunello before release. The result is a particularly complex, profound wine with remarkable aging potential.
The name Vignaferrovia refers to the 4.5-hectare single-vineyard plot located next to the historic Pian delle Vigne railway station, with soils composed of clay, limestone, and numerous small stones. This unique site, with southwest exposure and the influence of marine breezes, provides ideal ripening conditions for 100 % Sangiovese, the classic Brunello grape variety.
In the glass, the Vignaferrovia 2019 displays a deep ruby color with subtle garnet highlights. The nose is complex and inviting: ripe red fruits, cherries, and forest berries combine with spicy notes of tobacco, cocoa, clove, and balsamic accents. Hints of vanilla and cedar complete the bouquet, emphasizing the elegant influence of extended aging in large wooden barrels.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, harmonious, and refined, with silky, well-integrated tannins and lively freshness that supports a long, structured finish. The ripe fruit blends with spicy and slightly mineral nuances, reflecting the characteristic profile of Montalcino Sangiovese.
The Riserva designation indicates extended maturation – often over two years in wood and additional months in the bottle – which adds complexity, harmony, and long-term aging potential.
