The Sauternes Premier Grand Cru Classé 2022 from Clos Haut-Peyraguey is a truly prestigious sweet wine from the famous Sauternes appellation in Bordeaux, classified as 1er Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 classification—one of the highest distinctions for wines of this region. Clos Haut-Peyraguey is regarded as one of the iconic growths of the southern Graves and is grown on south-facing slopes shaped by morning mists and the influence of the Ciron river around Bommes, directly opposite the legendary Château d’Yquem. The vineyards lie on sandy limestone soils, providing ideal conditions for the development of Botrytis cinerea (“noble rot”), a defining element of great Sauternes.
In the glass, the 2022 vintage displays a bright golden colour with silvery highlights, immediately suggesting richness and elegance. On the nose, it reveals opulent aromas of ripe yellow peach, honey, candied citrus, exotic fruits such as mango and a hint of lychee, complemented by delicate oak spice and subtle vanilla notes. On the palate, this Sauternes is powerful yet beautifully balanced: rich and syrupy in texture, with harmonious sweetness, vibrant acidity and remarkable depth, giving the wine lasting presence and excellent ageing potential.
The blend of this great Sauternes is made predominantly from Sémillon, supported by a portion of Sauvignon Blanc. The botrytised berries are hand-selected, often through multiple passes, ensuring only the finest grapes with concentrated sweetness and intense aromatics are fermented and aged in barriques.
