Schmid-Oberrautner
The Schmid-Oberrautner Estate is one of the historic family wineries in South Tyrol and is located in the traditional wine-growing area of Gries in Bolzano. The origins of the estate date back several centuries; the Schmid family has managed the property for generations and continues to run it today as an independent winery. The historic Oberrautnerhof is situated in the district of Gries, one of the best-known areas for powerful South Tyrolean red wines.
The winery’s vineyards are located in and around Bolzano. Across several hectares of vineyards, around 50,000 to 60,000 bottles of wine are produced each year. The main grape varieties grown are the regional classics Lagrein and Schiava, complemented by varieties such as Pinot Noir, Merlot, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc.
The estate is particularly known for its Lagrein wines, one of South Tyrol’s most important indigenous grape varieties, whose historic home lies in the area of Gries near Bolzano. The Schmid family cultivates Lagrein in the classic vineyard sites around Gries and produces expressive red wines that reflect the character of the region. This grape variety therefore represents a central part of the portfolio and strongly shapes the style of the estate.
The philosophy of the winery is based on careful work in the vineyards and gentle processing of the grapes in the cellar. The aim is to produce wines that authentically reflect the origin, grape variety and terroir of Bolzano.
