Thomas Niedermayr
The Thomas Niedermayr — Hof Gandberg winery has a long tradition of organic viticulture that dates back to the mid-1980s. Rudolf Niedermayr, Thomas' father, was a pioneer in this field and founded the Bioland Südtirol Association. This decision led to the winery switching to growing mushroom-resistant varieties at the beginning of the 90s. The winery is convinced that good wine can only come from vines that are rooted in healthy, lively soils and have a wide variety of species.
Hof Gandberg is picturesquely nestled in the middle of the forest above Eppan Berg, southwest of Bolzano in the northern Italian Dolomites. In addition to the 5 hectares of vineyards, the diverse farm organism also includes 1 hectare of fruit growing, vegetable growing and chestnut trees as well as animal husbandry. The winery's vines grow in dolomite porphyry soils at around 500 meters above sea level and are influenced by the cool microclimate of the ice holes and the imposing Gandberg rock massif that rises behind the farm.
The close connection with nature in cultivation and in the cellar creates true wine treasures. The estate's white wines are ripe, complex wines with depth and minerality that reflect the characteristics of the soils and the terroir. They are allowed to mature in the cellar for several years to develop their full potential.
