The Sonnrain Cuvée 2020 by Thomas Niedermayr is a vibrant, aromatically complex white wine from Alto Adige, defined by its distinctive grape blend and sustainable viticulture. This wine is crafted from a carefully composed combination of the fungus-resistant varieties Solaris and Muscaris, which complement each other perfectly, delivering both fragrant freshness and expressive structure—an unmistakable commitment to diversity and innovation in modern winemaking. The grapes come from parcels surrounding the Gandberg estate in Eppan, at around 520 m above sea level, where calcareous clay soils with dolomite rock provide a distinctly mineral foundation. The estate’s organic farming approach focuses on sustainable management, minimal intervention in natural processes, and the promotion of healthy, vigorous vines.
In the glass, Sonnrain Cuvée shows a delicate straw-yellow colour with a bright, fresh clarity. On the nose, it opens with an inviting and multi-layered bouquet: gentle floral aromas, Mediterranean herbs, exotic hints such as lychee, and a saline freshness that gives the wine a lively yet elegant character. On the palate, it impresses with a harmonious balance of juicy fruit, spicy freshness and subtly salty minerality; the texture feels full and persistent, yet never heavy, offering both presence and lasting elegance. Thomas Niedermayr is known for a clear focus on authentic origin and a nature-driven wine style, where terroir and vintage take centre stage. Sonnrain Cuvée is a precise example of how modern, resilient grape varieties can be interpreted in organic viticulture not only sustainably, but also at a consistently high quality level.
