Martin Schgraffer comes from the village of Salurn in the southern part of South Tyrol and completed his education in viticulture and cellar technology at Geisenheim University.
After finishing his studies, he worked for several years as a cellar master at the Erste & Neue cooperative winery. He further strengthened his expertise through positions in renowned wine regions, including the USA (Oregon) and South Africa.
With this strong foundation, he later chose to become independent: in Salurn he acquired his own vineyards and started a small winery – not a large-scale operation, but a craft-focused estate dedicated to quality and individuality.
Today, Martin Schgraffer manages his winery with a modest vineyard area, typical of many small South Tyrolean producers who prioritize distinctive wine profiles and a strong sense of terroir. The estate is located in the Altkirch area near Salurn.
His philosophy is straightforward: hand-picked grapes when appropriate, gentle processing in the cellar, and an emphasis on preserving the region’s climatic and geological characteristics. Close involvement with the vineyards, personal attention to detail and a spirit of experimentation define his work. Smaller and bolder wine lines can also be found, whether in grape selection or cellar practices.
This is not a volume-driven winery, but one focused on authenticity and style. Wine lovers looking for characterful, individual South Tyrolean wines will feel at home here. In local media interviews, Schgraffer emphasizes that he consciously follows his own path – not necessarily the mainstream one, but one shaped by personality and conviction.
