Monteverro

Today, Georg and his wife Julia Weber — who joined the project in 2011 — run the winery alongside an international team.

The founding of Monteverro traces back to German entrepreneur Georg Weber, who fell in love in the early 2000s with the untamed beauty of southern Tuscany — the Maremma region near Capalbio. In 2003, he acquired around 50 hectares of hillside land sloping toward the Tyrrhenian Sea, about five kilometers from the coast, marked by its distinctive red clay soils and surrounding Mediterranean vegetation. His ambition was clear: not to create a traditional Italian country wine, but a world-class Bordeaux-style blend that would unite human craftsmanship with a truly unique terroir.
From 2004 onward, he began planting vines including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, as well as Syrah, Grenache, and Chardonnay. The first harvest was brought in in 2008, followed by the official debut vintage in 2011 with the first releases of the estate's four wines. Some early vintages were held back entirely if they didn’t meet the founders’ high standards – from the start, quality took precedence over quantity.
Today, the vineyard spans about 60 hectares of hilly terrain, at altitudes ranging between 30 and 80 meters above sea level. Of this, roughly 30 to 35 hectares are planted with vines, while the remainder is left untouched to support biodiversity through woodland, olive groves, and a natural lake. The terroir — rich in clay and iron, well-drained, kissed by sea breezes and surrounded by Mediterranean flora — distinctly shapes the wines' aromatic profile: mineral-salty tones, hints of spicy herbs, and a characteristic Mediterranean fragrance.
Today, Georg and his wife Julia Weber — who joined the project in 2011 — run the winery alongside an international team. Winemaker Matthieu Taunay, together with renowned consultants Michel Rolland and Jean Hoefliger, ensures a modern yet terroir-faithful approach to vinification. The cellar operates without pumps, grapes are hand-harvested, each micro-plot is vinified separately, and wines are aged for 24 months in French barriques to preserve purity and finesse. Since 2019, Monteverro has been certified organic — a further reflection of its responsible and sustainable philosophy.
Monteverro is now considered one of Italy’s most respected wineries, particularly among the ranks of Super Tuscans. Its flagship wine, “Monteverro”, enjoys international acclaim as a true expression of the Capalbio terroir, known for its solid structure, elegance, aging potential, and complex sensory depth. Production remains relatively small (around 180,000 bottles annually), ensuring meticulous attention to detail and unmistakable quality.
