Lebanese winemaking also promotes indigenous grape varieties such as Obeidy and Merweh, aiming to rediscover the roots of this centuries-old winemaking tradition.
Lebanon boasts a winemaking tradition spanning over 6,000 years, dating back to the time of the Phoenicians. Over the past two decades, the Lebanese wine sector has experienced remarkable growth: the number of wineries has increased from eight to nearly 50, and annual wine production stands at approximately 80,000 hectoliters, half of which is exported.
In 1997, on the recommendation of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), the Union Vinicole du Liban was established. In 2000, Lebanon passed a wine law, which led to the creation of the National Institute of Vine and Wine in 2013. Under the dynamic leadership of General Director Louis Lahoud, relations between the OIV and Lebanon have been further strengthened in recent years.
Lebanese winemaking also promotes indigenous grape varieties such as Obeidy and Merweh, aiming to rediscover the roots of this centuries-old winemaking tradition. The Bekaa Valley, situated at an altitude of about 1,000 meters, serves as the primary wine-growing region, offering ideal conditions with its limestone and gravel soils and unique microclimate.
Despite political and economic challenges, the Lebanese wine sector has proven to be dynamic and resilient. Participation in international events and the organization of "Lebanese Wine Days" in cities like Paris, Berlin, and New York have helped showcase the diversity and quality of Lebanese wines to a broad audience of professionals.
