The history of Averna begins in 1868 in Caltanissetta, Sicily, when Salvatore Averna, a respected pharmacist, developed a sweet-bitter herbal liqueur based on a secret family recipe. Originally, Averna was produced exclusively for private use and served as a digestif after meals. The recipe combines various herbs, roots, barks, and citrus fruits, which are macerated in alcohol to create a harmonious flavor that is sweet, bitter, and at the same time smooth. This unique blend reflects Sicilian tradition and the region’s rich botanical resources.

By the end of the 19th century, Averna began to gain recognition beyond Sicily. Demand grew rapidly, and production became commercialized while the brand retained its family-owned character. By the 1930s, Averna had already established itself as one of Italy’s leading amari and was valued both in Italy and internationally as a high-quality digestif.

Today, Averna is part of the Campari Group, which distributes the brand globally. Averna remains a popular digestif, enjoyed neat, over ice, or as part of classic cocktails.
