The distillery places great emphasis on using high-quality raw materials from South Tyrol, combining traditional distillation techniques with modern processes.
The Unterthurner Private Distillery is one of the oldest and most renowned distilleries in South Tyrol. It was founded in 1947 by Ignaz Unterthurner at the historic Priami estate in Marling, near Merano. As a stepson of a farming family, Ignaz initially learned the craft of distillation through “illegal distilling” and developed a deep passion for the art of spirit production. Together with his wife Luise Zipperle, a farmer’s daughter with business skills, he founded the commercial distillery immediately after World War II—a courageous step in a time of political uncertainty.
In the 1980s, their son Alois Unterthurner, together with his wife Christine von Pföstl, took over the family business. They expanded the product range and focused on spirits made from berries rather than the previously common Williams pears. This decision laid the foundation for today’s diverse portfolio.
Today, the distillery is run by the third generation, Stephan Unterthurner and his wife Renate. Under their leadership, the company has been modernized while maintaining a balance of tradition and innovation. The portfolio includes over 60 different spirits, including grappa, fruit brandies, liqueurs, gin, and rum. The distillery places great emphasis on using high-quality raw materials from South Tyrol, combining traditional distillation techniques with modern processes.
The Unterthurner Private Distillery is known for its high product quality and innovative spirit. Products such as “Waldler”, a raspberry spirit, and “Hausbitter”, an herbal liqueur, have received numerous awards. With over 75 years of experience in spirit production, the Unterthurner distillery remains true to its motto: “Master distillers by passion.” The company combines South Tyrolean tradition with modern craftsmanship, offering a unique tasting experience.
