The history of Zwack Unicum Nyrt. begins in the late 18th century in Budapest, Hungary. In 1790, Dr. József Zwack developed a unique herbal bitter based on a secret blend of over 40 herbs and spices. This beverage, which later became known as Unicum, quickly gained popularity and became a symbol of Hungarian drinking culture. The brand established itself especially as a digestif after meals and over time became one of Hungary’s most well-known spirits exports.

Throughout the 20th century, the company faced various political and economic challenges. During the communist era in Hungary, production was nationalized, and the Zwack family had to go into exile. Despite these difficult times, the Unicum recipe remained strictly secret, allowing the brand to retain its character. After the political transition in the 1990s, the Zwack family returned to Hungary and regained control of the company.

Today, Zwack Unicum Nyrt. is an internationally recognized company that, in addition to the classic Unicum, produces several variants such as Unicum Plum, Unicum Szilva, and the lighter Unicum Next line. The company remains based in Budapest and exports its products to numerous countries worldwide.
