Galliano

The liqueur’s name honors Giuseppe Galliano, an Italian war hero of the First Italo-Ethiopian War, who fell in the Battle of Adwa in 1896.

Galliano is an iconic Italian liqueur brand, founded in 1896 by Arturo Vaccari in Livorno, Tuscany. The liqueur’s name honors Giuseppe Galliano, an Italian war hero of the First Italo-Ethiopian War, who fell in the Battle of Adwa in 1896. The bright yellow color of Galliano symbolizes the gold rush years of the 1890s and was originally achieved with saffron, later replaced by the coloring agent tartrazine.
Galliano is produced at the historic Maraschi & Quirici distillery in Chieri, near Turin. There, the liqueur is distilled in small copper stills using over 30 different herbs, spices, and plant extracts. The production process involves seven infusions and six distillations, giving Galliano its unique flavor.
Since 2006, the Galliano brand has been part of the Dutch spirits company Lucas Bols. Under Bols’ management, various versions of Galliano have been introduced, including the original Galliano L’Autentico at 42.3 % ABV and the milder Galliano Vanilla at 30 % ABV. Other products include Galliano Ristretto, an espresso liqueur, and Galliano L’Apéritivo, an Italian amaro.
Galliano is famous for its use in classic cocktails such as the Harvey Wallbanger, the Golden Cadillac, and the Golden Dream. Its distinctive tall bottle, inspired by Roman columns, makes Galliano a recognizable part of international bar and cocktail culture.
