Malibu

Originally known as “Coco Rico,” the name was changed in 1980 to Malibu, inspired by the Californian coastal town famous for its relaxed lifestyle.

The Malibu brand was created in 1978 by British entrepreneurs Peter Fleck, James Espey, and spirits expert Tom Jago. Their goal was to develop a coconut liqueur that would simplify the preparation of Piña Coladas. Originally known as “Coco Rico,” the name was changed in 1980 to Malibu, inspired by the Californian coastal town famous for its relaxed lifestyle.
Production began in Curaçao and was later moved to the West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados to improve quality. In 2002, Malibu was sold by Diageo to Allied Domecq and in 2005 acquired by the French company Pernod Ricard.
Today, Malibu is a leading coconut liqueur, available in over 150 countries. Production is mainly in Canada, with additional sites in the USA and Spain to optimize global distribution. In addition to the classic coconut flavor, Malibu also offers variants such as mango, strawberry, and watermelon.
The brand is often associated with tropical fun and summer vibes and is known for its iconic white bottle with the palm tree logo. Malibu remains a popular ingredient in many cocktails and a symbol of the relaxed Caribbean lifestyle.
