The New York Distilling Company (NYDC) was founded in 2011 in Brooklyn, New York, and has since become one of the leading craft distilleries in the United States. The founding took place on December 5th, the anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition, symbolizing the distillery’s commitment to reviving the American distilling tradition.
NYDC was established by Tom Potter, co-founder of Brooklyn Brewery, and Allen Katz, a spirits and mixology expert. Their vision was to produce high-quality spirits that reflect both the history and the innovation of American distilling. Particularly noteworthy is the use of the historic Horton Rye, a rye variety brought to New York by settlers in the 17th century and nearly forgotten. Through partnerships with local farmers, this variety was revived and used in the production of their whiskeys.
In May 2025, the New York Distilling Company was acquired by the Scottish Loch Lomond Group to expand its portfolio with American whiskeys and increase both production capacity and visitor facilities.
