Senior & Co. takes pride in being the only producer to craft its Curaçao liqueur directly on Curaçao using the Laraha orange.

The Senior & Co. Distillery was founded in 1896 on the Caribbean island of Curaçao. The founders, Haim Mendes Chumaceiro (also known as Shon Inchi) and Edgar Senior, opened a pharmacy called Botika Excelsior, where they developed and sold a family recipe for a digestive liqueur named “Senior’s Curaçao Tonic”. The name was later changed to “Senior’s Curaçao Liqueur” to highlight the sweeter flavor profile.

After Chumaceiro’s death, his widow continued producing the liqueur on a smaller scale. It was not until 1945 that the company was officially established as a corporation, with descendants of the Senior and Chumaceiro families, along with several larger island companies, acquiring shares. At the same time, the new company purchased the recipe from Chumaceiro’s widow.

Today, Senior & Co. is internationally renowned for its authentic Curaçao liqueur, made from the Laraha orange, a bitter citrus fruit unique to Curaçao. Production takes place in the historic Chobolobo mansion in Willemstad, which also serves as a tourist attraction. Visitors can join guided tours to learn more about the history and production process of the liqueur.
