Aglianico – Structure, elegance and depth from Southern Italy

The Aglianico grape is one of Italy’s oldest native red varieties and finds its greatest expression in Southern Italy, particularly in Campania and Basilicata. Grown on volcanic soils and often at higher elevations, it produces wines with deep colour, firm tannins and vibrant acidity – all qualities that contribute to long ageing and impressive complexity.

In the Irpinia region of Campania, Aglianico reaches exceptional heights. The renowned winery Feudi di San Gregorio showcases the grape in two distinct styles: the Aglianico DOC “Rubrato” highlights a more approachable, fruit-driven expression, with notes of black cherry, licorice and spice. The Taurasi DOCG, by contrast, reveals the full depth and power of the variety – rich, layered and age-worthy, with dark berry fruit, sweet spices and refined oak integration.

Another standout interpretation comes from Pietracupa, whose Taurasi DOCG is grown in high-altitude vineyards and offers a more elegant, focused take on Aglianico. The wine impresses with freshness, mineral tension and aromas of plum, violet, leather and graphite.
