The Alicante grape is prized for its deep colour, bold structure and distinctly Mediterranean aroma profile. Originally from Spain, particularly the coastal region of Alicante, it also flourished in France under the name Alicante Bouschet – a crossing of Grenache and Petit Bouschet. As a teinturier grape, it is one of the few with red pulp as well as red skin, giving wines their naturally intense, vibrant colour.
In Tuscany, especially in the Maremma region, Alicante has carved out a place in quality viticulture. Here, it produces structured yet elegant wines with flavours of dark berries, herbs and spice. A standout example is the Toscana Rosso IGT Capatosta by Poggio Argentiera – a pure Alicante wine that showcases the grape’s potential. Aromas of ripe cherries, plums and a hint of tobacco unfold on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, smooth and persistent.
Thanks to its heat resistance and adaptability, Alicante is increasingly valued in sun-drenched regions and in the context of climate change. It remains a reliable variety for wines that are expressive, authentic and full of regional character.
