The Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG “Collepiano” 2021 by Arnaldo Caprai is a powerful yet elegant expression of the indigenous Sagrantino grape variety from Umbria. The grapes come from selected vineyards around Montefalco and are vinified as a single variety. Following an extended maceration on the skins, the wine is aged for approximately 22 months in French oak barriques, followed by further bottle ageing to develop structure, depth and balance. Collepiano is regarded as one of the benchmark wines of the appellation, combining traditional typicity with modern precision. It stands out for its high concentration, pronounced tannic structure and excellent ageing potential.
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby red colour with subtle violet highlights. The nose reveals a complex bouquet of dark berries, especially blackberry and sour cherry, complemented by spicy notes of pepper, clove and vanilla, along with balsamic nuances and hints of cocoa. On the palate, the Sagrantino is powerful, dense and structured, with ripe, assertive tannins, concentrated fruit and a long, persistent finish marked by depth and elegance.
