The Chardonnay DOC “Glarea” 2024 from Tramin Winery is an expressive white wine from Alto Adige, combining the depth and elegance of the Chardonnay grape with the distinctive minerality of its origin. The name “Glarea” comes from Rhaeto-Romance and means gravel, a reference to the unique vineyard soils on the slopes of the Mendola, where limestone- and gravel-rich sites shape the wine’s character. Cantina Tramin, a historic cooperative with a long winemaking tradition in the South Tyrolean lowlands, relies on careful hand harvesting, traditional wood vinification, and modern cellar work to create a wine profile that delivers both structure and freshness. In the glass, “Glarea” shows a bright straw-yellow colour with subtle green reflections, a typical hue for a fresh yet ripe Chardonnay from this origin. Chardonnay reveals an expressive aromatic range here: on the nose, notes of ripe banana, pineapple, and dried apricot emerge, supported by a delicate hint of oak spice that adds depth and personality. On the palate, this Chardonnay is lively and fresh, with a pleasant fullness and clearly defined minerality that gives the wine shape and leads into a long, harmonious finish. Lots aged in barrique, tonneaux, and larger wooden barrels create a balanced interplay between fruit and texture, without masking the wine’s natural freshness.
