The Montesodi Riserva IGT 2022 from the historic Castello Nipozzano of the Frescobaldi family is an elegant, terroir-driven red wine that expresses Tuscany’s great Sangiovese tradition in a modern interpretation. This 100% Sangiovese comes from the renowned Montesodi vineyard at around 400 metres above sea level, with a south-west exposure and well-drained, stony soils—ideal conditions for even ripening and highly concentrated aromatics. Montesodi is one of the estate’s top “cru” sites and is produced only in outstanding vintages such as 2022. In the glass, the wine shows an intense, vibrant ruby red colour. On the nose, it reveals a layered and complex bouquet: delicate floral notes of rose and violet lead into deeper fruit aromas of blackcurrant, raspberry and blackberry. Balsamic nuances and a subtle hint of liquorice add further depth and refinement to the aromatic profile. On the palate, the 2022 Riserva stands out for its balanced freshness and silky tannins, which provide harmonious structure. The wine’s fruit intensity is complemented by a clear mineral edge, creating a long, smooth finish. Traditional ageing includes approximately 18 months in large 30 hl casks made from Austrian and French oak, followed by further bottle ageing, which enhances complexity and balance.
