Appius 2021 from St. Michael-Eppan Winery is the iconic white wine of this historic Alto Adige estate and stands as a true expression of the region’s highest winemaking craft. Appius is produced only in outstanding vintages, combining the potential of great white wines with the mountain influence of its grapes. Sourced from historic sites around Eppan, it delivers the depth, freshness, and precision for which St. Michael-Eppan has been renowned for decades—shaped by a finely balanced blend and a long, meticulous ageing process. Appius is built primarily on Chardonnay, complemented by Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, and Sauvignon Blanc, creating a layered and harmonious cuvée. After hand harvesting, each variety is vinified separately; the wine first matures in small wooden barrels, then continues ageing for several years on fine lees in stainless steel tanks. This interplay of wood and extended maturation gives Appius its distinctive depth, structure, and elegance.
In the glass, it shows a bright pale straw-yellow colour with subtle green reflections.
The nose is refined and complex, shaped by notes of light fruit, white currant, citrus nuances, and an elegant mineral undertone. On the palate, freshness meets harmony, supported by vibrant acidity, clear structure, and persistent tension, leading to a long, multifaceted finish.
Appius 2021 is a white wine with real personality—powerful yet precise, balanced yet nuanced—impressive even in its youth, with further ageing potential ahead.
