The Nero d’Avola DOC Sedàra 2023 by Donnafugata is a Sicilian red that captures the grape’s typicity in a clear, approachable style, while still offering structure and a distinct sense of place. Sedàra represents a modern interpretation of Nero d’Avola: fruit-driven, cleanly made and well balanced between juiciness and spice, without excessive weight or harsh tannins.
In the glass, the 2023 shows an intense ruby-red colour with violet highlights. On the nose, it is open and precise, with notes of ripe cherry, plum and dark berries, supported by a discreet spicy layer that can recall Mediterranean herbs and subtle toasted nuances. On the palate, Sedàra is dry, softly structured and very harmonious, with ripe, well-integrated tannins and fruit clearly at the centre. Freshness adds lift and drinkability, while the finish brings pleasant spice and a clean, medium-length persistence.
In terms of grape variety, Sedàra is based on Nero d’Avola, Sicily’s most important red grape, known for dark fruit, warm spice and a solid structural core. Depending on the vintage, the blend may be completed with small amounts of other permitted varieties, but the overall character remains clearly Nero d’Avola-driven. Donnafugata is one of Sicily’s best-known quality producers, recognised for its strong focus on origin, stylistic precision and a distinctive interpretation of Sicilian wines.
