Italy

Italy, a land of stunning landscapes, rich history, and world-renowned wines.

In Italy, wine is almost part of the place setting — just like water and bread. You might think that wine must have its natural home here. This is not entirely true, because the real home is probably in Armenia and Georgia, but since ancient times Italy has been what the Greek name “Oinotria” means: the wine country! Italian wine is rightly drunk and appreciated by wine lovers all over the world. The land of famous paintings and churches has a huge variety of individual and high-quality wines, distinctive terroirs and, with its autochthonous grape varieties, plays in the absolute top segment of quality! Although Italy is behind Spain and France in terms of cultivated area - with just under 49 million hectoliters of wine per year, the country has the highest production worldwide.

History

Similar to France, Italy also looks back on over 3,000 years of winemaking history. At the time of the Roman Empire, there was already a distinctive wine culture. In the heyday of the Renaissance, the now famous and large wine houses such as Frescobaldi and Antinori were founded. However, we can only speak of a real upswing from the 19th century, when famous wines such as Barolo, Brunello and Chianti took the stage. The introduction of DOC in the 1970s finally brought about the increase in quality. Since then, DOC and DOCG wines must come from defined areas and grape varieties, meet certain stylistic requirements, and be prepared and aged according to prescribed methods. The cornerstone of Italian quality viticulture was laid and is still strictly controlled today.

Vines & Wine Styles

Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, Barbera and Montepulciano – even the names of these red grape varieties resonate with character and make any wine lover perk up. The finest Italian wines proudly stand alongside the best in the world. Yet describing their style is no easy task – the diversity of regions and terroirs is simply too great. From fresh, fruity reds in the north of Italy to wines with remarkable depth and complex aromas in the south, the range is vast. And since the late 1990s, white wines have also taken the stage – impressing with their fresh and vibrant character.

Climate & Terroir

Many years of winemaking tradition later, a glance at the map of Italy reveals a striking fact: there are few areas not at least partially covered with vineyards. Around 700,000 hectares of vineyard area stretch across the elongated form of the boot, spanning from the Alps to the Mediterranean. Some grape varieties feel the sea breeze, while others overlook majestic peaks soaring to 3,000 meters. The numerous advantageous combinations of altitude, latitude, and orientation have given rise to a diverse wine repertoire in each of Italy's 20 regions. While Italy today ranks as the world's largest wine producer by volume, narrowly ahead of France and Spain, its passionate winemakers are continuously refining their craft, driven by an ever-growing commitment to quality.
