South Tyrol is one of Europe’s most fascinating wine regions. Nestled between the Alps and the Dolomites, it covers around 5,500 hectares of vineyards shaped by a unique climate: hot days, cool nights and abundant sunshine ensure slow ripening of the grapes, resulting in wines of freshness, precision and elegance. The Romans already cultivated vines here, monasteries and noble families continued the tradition, and today South Tyrol stands as a benchmark for the perfect balance of centuries-old heritage and modern winemaking.
The region is best known for its outstanding white wines. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Gewürztraminer achieve remarkable clarity and minerality here, ranking among Italy’s finest. Equally emblematic are the reds: Lagrein, powerful and velvety, and Vernatsch (Schiava), light and fruit-driven, both deeply rooted in South Tyrolean culture. Together they embody the unique interplay of alpine freshness and Mediterranean warmth.
The landscape is diverse, and so are its wines: the Valle Isarco is renowned for its mineral-driven whites, around Caldaro, Bolzano and the Überetsch area you find both elegant whites and lively reds, while the Bolzano basin is considered the cradle of Lagrein. In the Vinschgau, high-altitude vineyards produce Riesling and refined native varieties.
Alongside renowned names such as Bozen Winery, Eppan Winery, Terlano, Caldaro, Girlan or St. Pauls, as well as private estates like Alois Lageder, Elena Walch and Franz Haas, it is the smaller producers that add further depth to the region’s wine culture. The Abraham Winery focuses on precise, terroir-driven whites, while the Taschlerhof is known for expressive Rieslings from steep slopes in the Valle Isarco. The Röck Winery continues the Eisacktal tradition with clear, mineral wines, and Thomas Niedermayr near Appiano pioneers sustainable viticulture with PIWI grape varieties. The Garlider estate, too, has built its reputation on Riesling of exceptional character. Classic names like the Pacherhof underline the finesse of Sylvaner and Kerner, while Egger Ramer in Bolzano stands as one of the historic specialists for Lagrein.
