The southern part of South Tyrol’s Unterland, also known as Bassa Atesina, stretches along the Adige River south of Bolzano to the border with Trentino. It is one of the warmest winegrowing areas in South Tyrol – ideal for bold, aromatic wines. Vineyards range from 200 to over 800 meters above sea level and offer a wide variety of soils, from sandy alluvial plains to calcareous hillside terroirs.
Typical grape varieties include Lagrein, Schiava (Vernatsch), Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. The white wines are fresh and structured; the reds are expressive, spicy, and elegant. Among the region’s leading wineries are the Laimburg Estate, known for its research-driven approach and quality, and Castelfeder, a family-run winery combining tradition and innovation. Alois Lageder is a biodynamic trailblazer in South Tyrol, while Peter Zemmer stands for clean, precise, modern winemaking. Smaller but renowned producers such as Elena Walch, known for her commitment to sustainability and expressive single-vineyard wines, Franz Haas, a pioneer in high-altitude viticulture and elegant Pinot Nero, and Haderburg, a specialist in traditional-method sparkling wines, enrich the region with distinct, character-driven wines. The South Tyrolean Unterland is a vibrant wine mosaic – rooted in quality, tradition, and regional identity.
