The Kalch IGT 2022 from Bergmannhof in St. Pauls near Eppan is a characterful red wine that clearly reflects the estate’s terroir and artisanal approach. The cuvée consists of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot, grown on clay-limestone gravel soils with very stony sections. The vines, trained using the Guyot system, are 20 to 35 years old and yields are deliberately kept low. The grapes are hand-harvested in mid-October. Vinification includes spontaneous fermentation on the skins with around 30% whole clusters in open tonneaux for three weeks. This is followed by malolactic fermentation and 20 months of ageing on the fine lees in oak tonneaux. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined, then aged in bottle for at least 15 months, adding depth and complexity. In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby red colour. The nose reveals dark berry aromas, herbal spice and mineral nuances. On the palate, it is structured, precise and layered, with ripe fruit, fine-grained tannins and a long, tension-filled finish.
