The Merlot Cabernet Riserva DOC Feld 2022 from Kaltern Winery is a powerful, traditional red wine from South Tyrol, harmoniously blending Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in a balanced Riserva composition. The grapes come from sun-drenched, south-facing vineyards at 250–350 m altitude, planted on sandy and clay-rich soils with porphyry, ideal for fully ripe, concentrated fruit. The blend consists of 70 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 30 % Merlot, a classic combination that provides both fruit depth and structural balance. After hand harvesting, the grapes are vinified separately: traditional maceration fermentation, followed by 12 months aging in French barriques, and additional maturation in large oak casks before bottling. In the glass, the Feld 2022 shows a deep ruby color, reflecting its concentration. The nose reveals ripe forest berries, plums, and blackcurrants, complemented by subtle spices, Mediterranean herb hints, and light tobacco and graphite notes from careful barrel aging. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and elegant, with soft, mature tannins giving a silky texture. Lively acidity supports the structure and emphasizes the ripe profile, while the finish is long and harmonious. The term Riserva signifies extended aging, providing extra complexity and depth – a wine that perfectly combines power and finesse, expressing South Tyrol at its finest.
